چکیده

A coupled hygro-thermo-mechanical computational model is proposed for fibre reinforced polymers, formulated within the framework of Computational Homogenisation (CH). At each macrostructure Gauss point, constitutive matrices for thermal, moisture transport and mechanical responses are calculated from CH of the underlying representative volume element (RVE). A degradation model, developed from experimental data relating evolution of mechanical properties over time for a given exposure temperature and moisture concentration is also developed and incorporated in the proposed computational model. A unified approach is used to impose the RVE boundary conditions, which allows convenient switching between linear Dirichlet, uniform Neumann and periodic boundary conditions. A plain weave textile composite RVE consisting of yarns embedded in a matrix is considered in this case. Matrix and yarns are considered as isotropic and transversely isotropic materials Correspondence to: Z. Stochastic multi-scale finite element based reliability analysis for laminated composite structures

This paper proposes a novel multi-scale approach for the reliability analysis of composite structures that accounts for both microscopic and macroscopic uncertainties, such as constituent material properties and ply angle. The stochastic structural responses, which establish the relationship between structural responses and random variables, are achieved using a stochastic multi-scale finite el...

A comprehensive review on modeling of nanocomposite materials and structures

This work presents a historical review of the researches procured by various scientists and engineers dealing with the nanocomposite materials and continuous systems manufactured from such materials. Nanocomposites are advanced type of well-known composite materials which have been reinforced with nanosize reinforcing fibers and/or particles. Such materials can be better suit for the industrial...

Prediction of long-term slake durability of clay-bearing rocks

A research program was conducted on different clay-bearing rocks selected from the Ilam, Sarpol-e Zahab and Tajarak regions (Iran) to predict their slaking characteristics. The new durability apparatus (nested mesh drums) separates disintegrated particles varying from > 25.4 to < 2 mm as the drums were rotated. On the basis of the particle size distribution, the disintegration ratio (DR) was us...

Evaluation of the durability of composite tidal turbine blades.

The long-term reliability of tidal turbines is critical if these structures are to be cost effective. Optimized design requires a combination of material durability models and structural analyses. Composites are a natural choice for turbine blades, but there are few data available to predict material behaviour under coupled environmental and cycling loading. The present study addresses this pro...

Three-dimensional nonlinear micro/meso-mechanical response of the fibre-reinforced polymer composites

A three-dimensional multi-scale computational homogenisation framework is developed for the prediction of nonlinear micro/meso-mechanical response of the fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Two dominant damage mechanisms, i.e. matrix elasto-plastic response and fibre-matrix decohesion are considered and modelled using a non-associative pressure dependent paraboloidal yield criterion and ...
